An elevator carrying workers in a mine owned by Impala Platinum in Rustenburg, South Africa’s North West province, fell approximately 200 meters down. As a result of this elevator accident, 11 workers lost their lives and 75 workers were injured. Impala Platinum, a South African mining company, has temporarily ceased operations at its Rustenburg mining complex in South Africa following this tragic incident, which the CEO described as the “darkest day” in the company’s history. According to a statement released by the Johannesburg-based platinum miner, a total of 86 workers were affected by the incident in shaft 11. All injured individuals were transported to four hospitals in the region, with 14 workers in the hospital classified as “high priority.” CEO Nico Muller expressed his condolences, stating, “Today is the darkest day in Impala’s history, and our hearts go out to all the lives affected by this devastating event.” Impala further announced that it had initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident and suspended all mining activities at the Rustenburg complex in South Africa’s North West province. The company spokesperson, Johan Theron, mentioned that the suspension could potentially be extended until Wednesday to allow the company time to mourn and emotionally heal. Following the incident, Impala’s shares in Johannesburg experienced a decline of 6.74 percent.
