Report:
Universal Children’s Day, celebrated on November 20, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about children’s rights.
According to a statement by the Support to Life Association, significant progress has been made in terms of children’s rights since the signing of the convention, which 196 countries are party to. However, there are still pressing issues that need immediate attention. Poverty, climate crisis, and wars have a profound impact on children worldwide, including in our country, due to the effects of the economic crisis. It is alarming that nearly half (593 million) of the 1.2 billion people living in poverty in 111 countries are children. Without preventive measures, an additional 8.9 million children will be forced to work by the end of 2022.
The Support to Life Association has launched the “Listen to These Bags” campaign to break the cycle of poverty for children. The campaign aims to provide school bags (OKİ) containing essential stationery items for primary school children and hygiene bags (HİJİ) containing personal cleaning materials to children in need, particularly in the association’s working areas in 10 provinces. Supporters can contribute to the campaign by donating through the Support to Life Association’s donation page.
In Turkey, 44.3 percent of children are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, a significantly higher rate compared to the EU countries’ average of 23.6 percent. Additionally, 33.7 percent of children in Turkey experience material deprivation, facing difficulties in meeting basic needs such as heating, cleaning, and nutrition. The escalating poverty levels force children to work, disrupt their education, and deprive them of the right to a healthy upbringing. The growing inequality with their peers perpetuates the cycle of poverty within their families. It is estimated that there are at least 720 thousand child workers between the ages of 5 and 17 in Turkey.
